Chris Down is Chief Design Officer at Mattel, the world’s largest toy company, with iconic brands including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Uno, Masters of the Universe and dozens more. Chris is responsible for global design, innovation and product development. Prior to this role, Chris has designed award-winning toys, produced video games on nearly every platform, launched innovative tech start-ups and he led the billion-dollar Vehicles division at Mattel. Most recently, Chris served as Senior Vice President and Global Head of Vehicles for Mattel, where he managed all aspects of Hot Wheels, Disney Cars, and Matchbox’s brand strategy and execution including business planning, design and marketing. In that role, he drove the Hot Wheels brand to achieve its biggest sales year to date by launching a revitalized digital marketing and content program, broadening consumer engagement with innovative new live events like the Hot Wheels Legends Tour, and Hot Wheels Monster Trucks Live and, most importantly, rearchitecting a toy line that is resonating with more kids today than ever before. Earlier in his career, Chris held leadership positions at a range of toy and digital interactive companies. He was Executive Producer on award-winning video games for Hasbro Interactive, Vice President of Online Game Development for Hasbro’s Games.com, and Chris also launched Atari Interactive’s innovation practice, Atari Labs, before founding the tech company, SomaGames, that created gaming apps for mobile and later became Dwango’s North American game development studio. Chris received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Design at the University of Notre Dame and he completed the UCLA Anderson School of Management Executive Program in Business Administration. When he’s not playing at work, he plays outside as a competitive cyclist in Southern California.
